The Dangers of Asbestos Removal

Asbestos, once widely used in building materials, poses significant health risks when disturbed. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to serious conditions such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. These fibers can become airborne during removal processes, making it crucial to rely on professional asbestos removalists to handle the job safely. Improper handling or DIY removal can exacerbate the dangers, leading to widespread contamination and increased health risks. Trusting experts ensures that asbestos is removed following strict safety protocols, minimizing exposure and safeguarding everyone involved.

By investing in professional asbestos abatement removal, you protect your family, employees, and clients from the harmful effects of asbestos exposure, creating a safer and healthier environment for all.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral used in building materials for its fire-resistant properties. It is dangerous because inhaling asbestos fibers can cause serious health issues, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

Asbestos is more common in materials installed before 1980 but due to materials being warehoused for years and materials continually being imported with asbestos, we have found asbestos structures built throughout the 80s, 90s and beyond that have asbestos materials.  Commonly removed asbestos materials by our team include:  spray on insulation, fireproofing, piping and fitting insulation, duct insulation, flooring, siding, roofing, fire doors, boiler insulation, caulking, vermiculite, glues, mastics, popcorn ceiling texture, plaster, drywall texture and drywall mud.

We do asbestos removal in commercial, residential and industrial settings throughout Wisconsin.  This includes pre-demolition and pre-renovation asbestos abatements services as well.  Our projects range in size from $250 to $5 million dollars plus.   Our team of experts are known to complete projects on time and budget.  DDC enjoys simple projects as well as complex projects with challenging schedules.

Homes and buildings constructed before the 1980s are more likely to contain asbestos.  A professional asbestos inspection or testing may be necessary to confirm its presence.  DDC does not perform testing services as this is considered a conflict of interest in our eyes.  We can provide contacts that do testing services if you’d like.  DDC then reviews these results to prepare a work proposal and scope.

Asbestos abatement means that asbestos materials are physically removed.  Asbestos encapsulation means the asbestos materials or a portion of the asbestos material is left in place and covered to reduce risk of future exposure.  A common example of asbestos encapsulation is the covering of asbestos piping insulation and asbestos ductwork seam tape with a layer of lag cloth and a bridging encapsulant paint.

Asbestos removal work is required by law to be done by licensed companies by their licensed personnel.  Severe consequences, liabilities, risk to occupants’ safety, risk to personal safety, etc can be a result of not having asbestos removal done professionally.  Some local regulations may allow asbestos removal by the home owner in their own home assuming it is not a rental, etc but we recommend all asbestos abatement to be done by the professionals with the proper equipment and personal protective equipment.

The duration of asbestos abatement depends on the size of the area and the complexity of the job. It can take from a few days to a week or more.

First, we prepare a written proposal with a work scope and pricing which may include a walkthrough of the property as needed.  Once the proposal is approved, this work is then scheduled.  The removal process involves using specialized equipment with HEPA Filtration to remove the asbestos materials safely and disposing of the same according to DNR regulatory guidelines.   In many scenarios, this also includes creating a negative pressure enclosure system complete with HEPA Filtration before beginning the work.

The cost varies depending on the extent of asbestos present and the area needing treatment. A professional assessment will provide an accurate estimate.

If you suspect asbestos, do not disturb the material.  The only way to confirm if materials contain asbestos is through professional testing.  DDC does not perform testing services as this is considered a conflict of interest in our eyes.  We can provide qualified contacts that do testing services if you’d like by contacting our office.  Often the appearance or characteristics of certain building materials such as piping insulation can increase the likelihood that it is asbestos and worst-case scenario assumptions can be made.
