We are very proud to announce our donation of $2752 to the Rusk County reforestation project of Spring 2025.

This reforestation effort stems from the need to restore Eastern White Pine in Rusk County Forest, where it once thrived but was nearly wiped out by historic logging. Since the Great Cutover of Northern Wisconsin, slow-growing hardwoods have taken over, preventing natural regeneration. To reverse this loss, the forest was prepared for planting, setting the stage for reintroducing 200-300 white pine seedlings per acre across 24 acres.

In addition, the Rusk County Forest Climate Action Plan prioritizes resilience by introducing tree species suited for a warming climate. This project will assist the migration of Black Walnut and White Oak—species just outside their natural range—onto 10 acres of nutrient-rich soil to strengthen biodiversity and long-term forest health.

Beyond ecological benefits, this effort also provides rehabilitation opportunities by using prison crew workers instead of contractors, helping individuals gain work experience before reentering the workforce. With our $2,752 donation, this 20-acre project will be completed in spring 2025 (or 2026 if seedlings are unavailable), ensuring a healthier, more resilient forest for future generations.
